Nevada City Schools and Education

An Essay on Nevada City Schools

By Courtney Smith, Author, age 15 at the time of this writing.

Since the year 2000 the Nevada City Schools have seen an immense increase in scores for the STAR Testing. The California department of education says that each school has to have a score of at least 800. The Nevada City schools topped the state target of 800 with flying colors! Gold Run had their scores 880, Deer Creek made it to 835, Seven Hills got to 825, and Nevada City Elementary had a score of 808.

In addition to the excellent test scores, the Nevada City School District has wonderful programs for children who love the arts and technology, as well.

For the little ones, at Gold Run, the teachers have a  science program where they take their students out to the garden to grow plants. In addition to having fun planting seeds, the students get to learn about science from the teachers who read to them and get them to write  occasionally.

At Deer Creek, They also get to learn about science by building boats, cars, and planes in the Production Lab. This teaches them the importance of critical thinking, problem solving, cooperative learning, and perseverance among other things.

Seven Hills has the kids’ go on a five night four day trip to Marin, Headlands to learn about the coastal environment which includes indoor and outdoor labs.

The children have a lot of fun at these schools, and learn a lot as well. The Schools are also fairly close together, which comes in handy for those families who have more than one child.

If Public School isn’t for you, then there is always home school which is also a good option. Granted that there is not as much interaction between children, there is more of a chance for you to put your input in. Home School is a very large choice for Nevada City.

There is also one more choice for families which is Early Kindergarten. The Early Kindergarten program is for children whose birthdays are after December first. Some parents also put their kids in it, because their children are just not quite ready for Kindergarten yet.

All of the choices in education stated above are wonderful. They are fun but full of learning. The arts are interacted hugely, but there is still a strong academic background that is not forgotten.
